Nusantaranews.net, Payakumbuh - Hundreds of enthusiastic visitors flocked to the opening ceremony of the West Sumatra Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival which was held from 12th to 17th of October 2023 at Agam Jua Batang Agam Payakumbuh City.
This activity presented a number of participants from various districts/cities in West Sumatra and other provinces as well as five delegates from abroad.
One of the performances that amazed the visitors that night was from the Self-Defense Group based in Delhi, India, called Nithya Caintanya Kalari, who demonstrated the martial art of Kalaripayattu. NC Kalari established in 1993, dedicated itself to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Kalaripayattu.
Kalaripayattu is an Indian martial art that originated in Kerala India around 3,000 years ago. Kalaripayattu is known for its long history in Indian martial arts, and is one of the oldest surviving martial arts in the world.
Dr. Murugan Pillai, Head Teacher and founder and secretary of Nithya Chaithana Kalari in North India told a journalist at www.nusantaranews.net that Kalarippayattu is more than just martial arts.
It encompasses an entire way of life, combining physical fitness, mental stability, spiritual awareness, healing, and meditation. A true Kalari warrior will not harm his opponent. And if any harm is incurred, he must also be able to care for and heal the injured.
Nithya Chaithan's name was carefully chosen to reflect the ancient form of martial arts. Nithya is a Sanskrit word meaning 'always or eternal'. Chaitanya means 'energy, consciousness, vitality, life, knowledge.
"Our vision is that Nithya Chaithana Kalari is expected to become an international center for learning and exchange of techniques, knowledge, ideas and research on martial arts and related healing and meditation," explained Guru Dr. Murugan Pillai. (Rstp)
